12 year-old Bethelsdorp girl shot dead, father wounded in suspected gang hit

JUNE 8, 2016

Port Elizabeth police have appealed to the public for assistance with information that might lead to the arrest of suspects who shot and killed a twelve year-old girl in Bethelsdorp and her father, in a suspected gang hit.

"On Tuesday night, 7 June 2016 at about 23:00, a Bethelsdorp father and his twelve year old daughter were shot in their house, the young girl being fatally wounded," said police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu.

"According to police information, the family was asleep when they heard loud knocking on their front door.  The 43 year old man refused to open the door and the suspects went around to the back of the house, kicked open the door and entered.  The owner of the house was shot three times and wounded, while his twelve year old daughter was shot once and died."

The motive for the shooting is yet to be established and police are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder.

"The SAPS condemns this attack and senseless killing of an innocent child in the strongest terms.  All means possible will be used to thoroughly investigate this case and bring the culprits to book," said Colonel Naidu.

"Anyone who can assist police in their investigation is asked to contact the Gang Task Team, D/W/O Clive Phillips on 082 387 6765."
