Seven Warriors' players make cut for SA U19 squad selection
Following the conclusion of the Under-19 Cubs Week, the South African U19 squad was named in Stellenbosch on Sunday night to face Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe U19 in an ODI triangular series. Following the triangular series, the SA U19 side will then face a three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka.
The 10-match triangular series will take place in Stellenbosch and Paarl from the 14th until the 28th January, followed by the three ODI’s against Sri Lanka in Oudtshoorn from the 1st until the 5th of February.
The squad that was named includes seven players from the Warriors U19 Cubs side, with Wiaan Mulder from the Lions U19 Cubs side selected as captain. Speaking of Mulder’s captaincy, as well as the selection of the Warriors’ Lutho Sipamla, Coach Lawrence Mahatlane, believes the side has a fine balance of experience and should feature well in their prospects ahead of the forthcoming series.
“It’s an exciting group of players. I think the difficulty in selecting the team shows the quality of cricket that has been on show this week. It was tough to pick the side, but I think we’ve got the right balance from a long term and a short term point of view,” Mahatlane told the Cricket South Africa media forums.
“It’s important to note that we weren’t just looking at performances this week but how the guys have done throughout the year and how we believe they will perform against Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe,” Mahatlane added.
Sipamla, who would have represented the Warriors U19 Cubs side, missed the Cubs Week games due to a received call-up to represent Eastern Province at the senior CSA One-Day Challenge tournament. He will be adjoined by six other Warriors U19 Cubs’ players to represent the national U19 side, namely: Siphamandla Kwreqe, Matthew Breetzke, Akhona Mnyaka, Jason Niemand, Jade de Klerk and Keenan Smith.
The rest of the Coca Cola SA U19 squad: Jesse Christensen (Cape Cobras), Michael Cohan (Cape Cobras), Ruan de Swardt (Titans), Wandile Makwetu (Highveld Lions), Mohammed Mayet (Highveld Lions), Mitchell van Buuren (Highveld Lions) and Raynard van Tonder (Knights).
The Lions U19 Cubs side won the 2017 edition of the CSA Cubs Week.
