143 suspects arrested by Uitenhage police in weekend anti-crime opperations

Police officers in the Uitenhage SAPS Cluster have arrested a total of 143 suspects during crime prevention operations that were conducted over the past weekend. 

According to police spokesperson, Lieutenant Gerda Swart; "Operations were conducted from Friday, until 06:00, this morning, Monday."

Forty traffic fines were issued to the value of R20 000 and arrests made varied from housebreaking and theft; assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm; theft; illegal possession of drugs; nine arrests were made for driving under the influence of liquor.  A total of 64 fines were issued for other liquor related crimes. 

"Six persons were arrested and detained for the illegal possession of drugs," said Lieutenant Swart.

"Two suspects were arrested for the possession of suspected stolen goods that were found in their possession."  

Swart also said that police in the Uitenhage Cluster will continue with their efforts to combat crime effectively in the area and operations will be conducted on a daily basis. 

"The South African Police Service in Uitenhage appeal to the community to work with the SAPS in reducing crime by providing valuable information that will lead to the arrest of suspects and the recovery of stolen property.  Together we are making South Africa safer."
