174 suspects arrested in Uitenhage weekend anti-crime operations

Police officers in the Uitenhage SAPS Cluster on Tuesday afternoon announced that they arrested a total of 174 suspects during crime prevention operations that were conducted over the past weekend. 

"The operations were conducted from Friday, until 06:00, Monday," said police spokesperson, Lieutenant Gerda Swart.

"A total of 53 traffic fines were issued, valued at R26 500. 

"The arrests made varied from housebreaking and theft, assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm, possession of suspected stolen goods, robbery common, etc.  17 arrests were made for driving under the influence of liquor. A total of 45 fines were issued for other liquor related crimes. 41 Persons were arrested and detained after illegal drugs were found in their possession."

Lt Swart said police in the Uitenhage Cluster will continue with their actions to combat crime effectively in the Uitenhage Cluster. 

"The South African Police Service appeal to the community to work with the SAPS in reducing crime by providing valuable information that will lead to the arrest of suspects, the tracing of illegal firearms and the recovery of stolen property."
