The Butterworth Regional Magistrate's Court on Thursday sentenced a 23-year-old man, Sonwabile Seyise, to undergo 12 years imprisonment for the rape of a 54-year-old woman.

"The sentence is welcomed by the Eastern Cape Police as it is in line with priority that crimes against women and children enjoy a very high priority in this province," said police spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha.

"It is alleged that on 2 February 2017, at about 10:00, the victim aged 54 was walking alone at Booi Farm, Butterworth. She came across the accused who threatened her with a spear and dragged her to a nearby forest.

"The accused raped her and also robbed the victim of her cellphone."

Captain Manatha said that thorough and responsive investigation by Butterworth Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) investigator contributed to the speedy conviction and sentencing of the accused.
