MAY 5, 2015

The Butterworth Regional Magistrate Court convicted and sentenced Phakamani Xala, aged 25, to twenty years imprisonment for raping a 16-year-old girl, Eastern Cape police said.

The allegation is that the accused person went to a certain house at Ibika Township Butterworth on the 25 December 2014 at about 22:50 to visit his girlfriend. He found the girl, who is the relative of his girlfriend, as his girlfriend was away at her rural home.

The accused drew his knife and stabbed the victim on her right arm and raped her as she was alone in the house. A case of rape was registered with Msobomvu Police Station.

The case was handed to the Butterworth Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS). The unit traced the suspect and arrested him.

He was charged with rape.
