25 year-old Cradock man gets 23 years in prison for rape

SEPTEMBER 7, 2015

The Grahamstown High Court has sentenced a 25 year-old Cradock man to 23 years imprisonment for rape.

Mvuyisi Witbooi was convicted of raping a 15 year-old girl, who he found walking home with her boyfriend on 12 April 2014. Witbooi had three other accomplices.

"Out of those four men, two of them grabbed [the girl's] boyfriend, at the same time the other two grabbed her and took her to a house in Atlanta, Cradock.

"This is where she was allegedly raped by both men, but there was not enough evidence available to get a conviction on the second suspect," Eastern Cape police said in a statement.

Const. Bongeka Dulwana, from the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit in Cradock, was given the task of bringing the criminals to book.

"The arresting of the 25-year old accused came as a result of great work from her, by means of around-the-clock investigation, following up on leads and collecting evidence," the police said.

"She is highly applauded on a job well done."
