25-year-old Port Alfred man arrested for torching landlord’s home


Port Alfred police arrested a 25-year-old man after he allegedly set alight a house in Ngidane Street, Nemato, Port Alfred, on Monday afternoon.

According to the police, the owner of the house resides in Grahamstown and the house was in the care of a 17-year-old relative, who was at school when the incident occurred.

“The motive for the arson is not yet known.  The suspect is on parole for another offence and it alleged that he also lives on the same property,” said police spokesperson, Captain Mali Govender.

She added that, the total value of items destroyed by the fire is estimated at R15 000.

The suspect will appear in the Port Alfred Magistrate Court on Wednesday facing charges of arson.
