270 suspects arrested in Uitenhage over the past weekend


Uitenhage police had a busy weekend, arresting 270 suspects on various charges through high density operations in the area.

The arrested included 28 suspects for driving under the influence of liquor; one for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, rape, housebreaking and theft and assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm.

“A total of 68 traffic fines were issued, valued at more than R34 000,” said Captain Gerda Swart.

“The suspects were arrested on charges relating to theft, possession of suspected stolen goods; 34 suspects were detained for the illegal possession of drugs."

Furthermore, a liquor premises in Despatch received a fine for not complying with the Liquor Act, after police found the owners selling liquor outside the prescribed hours; a total of 71 fines were issued for other liquor related crimes.

The South African Police Service appeal to the community to work with the SAPS in reducing crime by providing valuable information that will lead to the arrest of suspects, the tracing of illegal firearms and the recovery of stolen property.
