Peddie Regional Court on Tuesday sentenced and convicted 40-year-old Mzukisi Tonisi for rape and assault that occurred in August 2015 at Peelton Location, outside King Williams Town.

“The conviction follows after the King Williams Town Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) detectives worked tirelessly in investigating the case and managed to apprehend the suspect,” said police spokesperson, Captain Siphokazi Mawisa.

She added that, the suspect appeared at Zwelitsha Magistrate’s Court on the 3rd of September 2015 and the investigating officer successfully opposed bail and Tonisi was remanded in custody.

“He appeared several times at court and the case was transferred to Regional Court on January 2016 and Monday, he was found guilty, sentenced and convicted to life imprisonment for rape and seven years imprisonment for Assault,” said Captain Mawisa.

The Commander for King Williams Town Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit, Lieutenant Colonel Zitulele Mahlambeni, has welcomed the sentence and said he hopes that it will serve as a deterrent to other would-be perpetrators.

He commended an excellent job done by Detective Sergeant Mkhuseli Falo that led to the conviction and sentencing of the accused.

“The suspect was convicted within a year and this shows a good job done by Detectives on investigating this case,” he added
