52-year-old Centane man arrested for raping 75-year-old woman

A 52-year-old suspect was arrested on Friday, for the alleged rape of a 75-year-old woman in Centane, near Butterworth.

According to Eastern Cape police, the victim was sleeping alone at her house when she felt somebody inside her bed - this was on las week Monday at about 21:00 at Kabakazi Location, in Tafalofefe Village, Centane.

"When she looked at the intruder she recognised him and called him by his name to stop what he was doing.

"The suspect ignored the plea of the victim and raped her," police said.

"The 75-year-old woman cried out very loud and her neighbour came to her rescue. The suspect took off but was eventually traced and arrested on Friday.

"He has since been charged with rape and will appear before the Centane Magistrate Court on Tuesday."

Butterworth Cluster Commander Brigadier Stanley Sibhidla condemned the attack on elderly woman and praised the police for their swift actions in tracing and arresting the suspect.
