Around 5 700 graduates will receive their degrees and diplomas during several Walter Sisulu University 2017 graduation ceremonies. The ceremonies will run from 3 to 12 May and will see 80 Cum Laude recipients from all four of its campuses.

"This is despite the numerous national student disruptions in 2016," the university said.

"Recognition goes to all academic staff and dedicated students who tirelessly committed time for studies, making parents and the university proud.

"This is a true reflection of partnership, commitment and dedication between students and academics during their work and study at WSU."

The university said that its Mthatha campus will, for the first time, have the services of a sign language interpreter for the benefit of the parents of one graduand, who despite her achievements could not express and celebrate in a normal manner because both parents are deaf.

She had to learn sign language at home to be able to communicate with her parents.

“As a largely rural-based institution working within this context, it’s absolutely critical that WSU, through its teaching, learning and research, produces graduates that possess the necessary skills and expertise for South African economy and the world,” said the university.
