A romantic break: Experience the charm of Thunzi Bush Lodge

BY LIANDE BARNARD - FEBRUARY 9, 2015

Situated just 30km outside of the Port Elizabeth CBD, Thunzi Bush Lodge is one of the region’s best kept secrets. Arriving late on a weekend afternoon, we were greeted with tangy refreshments from William, the lodge manager.

Thunzi has four secluded wooden cabins and two chalets (a four and a six-sleeper) - all of which are available on a self-catering basis. Our chalet was well-equipped with all the amenities you would expect at a Four-Star lodge and was beautifully-adorned with petals on the balcony, bath and bed along with complimentary chocolates. It was surrounded by lush indigenous bush and offered panoramic views of the nearby valley.

Shortly after unpacking, our gourmet picnic lunch arrived and we were soon on our way to a prepared picnic area.

Arriving there, we found a blanket and pillows laid out alongside a short-legged table set with glasses, crockery, cutlery and serviettes in the cool shade of a huge tree surrounded by indigenous forest and bird song. We basked in the afternoon sun, played, shared lots of stories and laughs – it was blissful.

Our afternoon indulgence consisted of choice hams, a Greek salad, dill pickled cucumbers and Mediterranean mix, a selection of cheeses, smoked snoek and feta pâté, cashew nuts and sun-dried tomato pesto, crostini crackers, freshly-baked bread, chocolate and a nut brownie! We dug in…

Satisfied, we retired to our chalet in order to escape the summer heat and later spent the remainder of the day enjoying the lodge’s sparkling pool.

Later, in the evening, we prepared a tasty braai at our private boma. While the warm fire crackled in the background, we dined, imagined and enjoyed clear views of the night sky before turning in for the evening.

Following a restful sleep, we prepared a healthy breakfast to the tranquil sounds of the early morning bush. Sadly, we would leave that same morning – promising ourselves to return again soon. I believe that Thunzi’s secret is that it offers a truly exceptional experience that will be enjoyed by anyone, especially romantic couples, wanting to spoil themselves with a quality getaway that is not too far from home.

Did you know that Thunzi’s Gourmet Picnics are open to the public at just R350 per couple? Booking is essential. Call Trenwyth or William on 072 597 4810 or visit www.thunzibushlodge.co.za today!
