Academy of Creativity Annual Visual Arts Exhibition

Masifunde Learner Development is proud to announce their annual arts exhibition, presented by their Academy of Creativity. The exhibition is currently taking place from the 16th of May to the 2nd of June 2017 at the ARTEC Gallery in Central. Twenty-seven learners from Walmer Township are exhibiting their personal art works under the theme Faces of Walmer.

An opening night took place on Tuesday 16th of May at the ARTEC Gallery at 17:00. Jonas Schumacher, Managing Director of Masifunde, welcomed the guests and introduced the organisation and the various arts programme implemented by Masifunde. “Our communities are full of creativity and hidden talent,“ he said. “It is in everybody’s interest to unleash and groom as many of these beautiful talents as possible. It will not only be life-changing for the individual but will have positive effects for the communities and society at large.”

Three of the young artist including, Lwando Lunika, shared their testimonies and how the visual arts programme has changed their lives. Many art works were sold on the opening night which gave the young artist a boost of self-confidence and motivation to continue to work hard. 18 year old Lwando Lunika sold an art piece for proud R3000. He was very excited and pleased with his work and spoke about the impact that the sale would have for him and his family.

The MC for the night, Yolanda Bukani, coordinator of the Academy of Creativity, lead through the evening and introduced other Masifunde groups. The programme also included outstanding performances by the Masifunde Youth Choir which toured through Germany and Switzerland last year, and the Masifunde Drama group who performed a piece titled “Stop Gender Based Violence”.
