Aces cut Chippa short

Chippa United had a disappointing outing over the weekend when they were defeated 1-0 by Mpumalanga Black Aces at Mbombela Stadium, in Nelspruit, on Saturday night in their ABSA Premiership fixture.

It was two minutes into the second half, when Aces broke the agonising deadlock between the two sides. Vincent Kobola gave a low cross from the right wing for goal-scorer, Collins Mbesuma, to deflect it easily into the goals.

11 minutes later, Aces almost scored again to double-up their chances for victory when Lehlohonolo Nonyane rattled the goal post directly from a free kick.

The Chilli Boys also missed out on scoring chances with Andile Mbenyane shooting straight at Aces goalkeeper, Shu-Aib Walters. This was followed by a shot wide of target by Joseph Malongoane when he just had the goalkeeper to beat.

Minutes before halftime, the Chilli Boys had another golden opportunity to score when Walters’ pass from his own goal area was intercepted by Chippa forwards, only for the opportunity to be spurned by Mbenyane.

On the 77th minute, Chippa defender, Eric Chipeta, ironically created a goal-scoring opportunity when a header on target was excellently saved by Aces keeper, Walters. The Aces were then able to hold out for a hard-fought victory.

Now 6th placed Chippa United, have a tough job ahead of them in the form of Mamelodi Sundowns. Sundowns will be going into match confident after opening up a 3-point gap at the top of the ABSA PSL Log over the weekend.

The two clubs meet at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Tuesday, in an ABSA Premiership match.
