Ackermann happy with Lions fitness

BY NATALI IVERSON - APRIL 14, 2015

Emirates Golden Lions coach, Johan Ackermann, has said that he is pleased with his team’s fitness level after having played nine rounds of Super Rugby matches.

The Lions have won five of their nine matches so far this season, and are currently sitting seventh on the 2015 Super Rugby log.

Ackermann’s team will be resting this week and will next be facing the Toyota Free State Cheetahs at the Emirates Airlines Park on the 25th of April.

After playing nine consecutive games, the Lions have not had many injuries thus far, with Ackermann saying that his team is “very lucky”.

“During the off season, we thought long and hard about how we’re going to manage the players and thus far we’ve done well in that regard,” Ackermann said.

Utility back, Jaco van der Walt, has been the Lion’s only long term injury after fracturing his jaw earlier in the season.

Wings Courtnall Skosan and Sampie Mastriet, who are both suffering with ankle injuries, are set to return to the team next week.

Lock, Martin Muller, who has a calf injury and prop, Schalk van der Merwe, who is currently sick with the flu, will both be considered for the match against the Free State side.
