Agreement in sight with high energy users

SEPTEMBER 16, 2014

An agreement with 14 high energy users in dispute with the municipality over electricity tariff increases could be reached before the end of this month.

Chief Financial Officer Trevor Harper told the Budget and Treasury Committee this morning that he was in discussion with the 14 companies and hoped there would be an agreement “before the end of this month”.

Harper said that he was unable to provide the committee with further information because of a “confidentiality agreement,” adding that at the end of August the companies, which are paying 76% of their current accounts, were in arrears collectively to the tune of R156 million.

The companies disputed the electricity tariff increases approved by Council for both the 2012/13 and 2013/14 financial years. Initially five companies were par-ty to the dispute but they were later joined by another nine. - metrominutes
