Alert CCTV monitor hero in Port Elizabeth R1 million dagga bust

JULY 16, 2015

Big brother is watching. Eight suspects were arrested with more than R1 million worth of dagga on Thursday at Brighton Beach in Port Elizabeth - all thanks to an alert municipal official, who was monitoring the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality's extensive CCTV network.

Police believe the dagga was being transported from Mthatha for distribution in the Bay.

Apparently, the municipal official noticed people off-loading suspicious bags from a truck to a mini-bus at Brighton Beach and alerted local police. PE police arrived at the scene where they were able to arrest six suspects.

A police chopper was also on hand to assist with the apprehension of two other suspects, who had fled when police arrived.

18 large bags filled with dagga, weighing 520 kilograms, and with a street value of R1.3 million were recovered.
