Alert Despatch cop saves woman following alleged suicide attempt

NOVEMBER 24, 2015

An alert Despatch police officer saved the life of a 36-year-old female on Sunday night after she allegedly jumped from the Ben Schoeman bridge, in Despatch, outside of Port Elizabeth.

"Members from SAPS Despatch received the complaint after 20:00 on Sunday night and after combing through the bushes they found the victim, laying face down, in the middle of the river," Eastern Cape police said.

"They then summonsed police divers to the scene to assist them with the recovery of the body.

"Whilst members were on the scene, one of the members, Const Bruce Brits, noticed the victim moving and without hesitation jumped into the water and rescued the victim out of the cold water."

The victim was taken to a local hospital, in a stable condition, for treatment.

The acting Station Commander, Capt Flippie de Jager, praised the member for the heroic act performed.
