Alert Port Alfred cops arrest man in possession of illegal abalone worth R20 000

Port Alfred police on Friday, arrested a 30 year-old man for possession of abalone worth R20 000 on the R72 road, in the direction of East London.

According to the police, a female police officer was returning to the station with a civilian employee. As they approached a local hiking spot, they noticed a man, who was hitchhiking getting onto a truck that was heading in the East London direction,

“The police officer returned to the station and dropped off the civilian employee.

“Together with two other police officers, she drove onto the R72 and caught up with the truck,” said police spokesperson, Captain Mali Govender.

She added that, upon searching the man’s bag, they found 97 abalone with an estimated value of approximately R20 000.

The suspect is expected to appear before the Peddie Magistrate’s Court facing charges of possession of illegal abalone.
