Alleged Port Elizabeth hijacker dies after movie-style police chase

A suspected hijacker died in Motherwell, Port Elizabeth, following a high speed chase and shootout with police on Tuesday evening after he allegedly hijacked a VW Polo TSI in Matana Street, in KwaNobuhle, Uitenhage, on Tuesday morning.

According to the Port Elizabeth police, the suspect was spotted driving the stolen vehicle in Summerstrand in the evening. it was then that the Port Elizabeth Flying Squad and the car hi-jack task team gave chase up to the N2 Highway, near the Kinkelbos area, Motherwell.

“A shootout then ensued after the suspect opened fire on the pursuing police members. The police officers returned fire and fatally injured the suspect,” said Port Elizabeth Police spokesperson, Captain Gerda Swart.

That was when the suspect lost control over the vehicle opposite the Kinkelbos Police Station, smashed into a barricade and died on the scene.

Police recovered the stolen vehicle and a firearm with its serial number filed off.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) was informed.
