ANC confident of retaining Metros

BY CHARL BOSCH - JANUARY 28, 2016

African National Congress (ANC) Secretary General Gwede Mantashe has reportedly indicated the party remains confident it will retain control of the metros it governs after this year’s municipal elections.

Addressing the media in Pretoria on Wednesday following a meeting of the ANC’s National Executive Committee, Mantashe said a lot of work had been done in an attempt to resolve problems relating to service delivery and financial irregularities in a number of areas

“National and provincial government have intervened decisively where necessary to ensure that weak or dysfunctional municipalities are capacitated and if in the interests of better governance, political leadership has been changed,” he said.

He also denounced reports that a number of protest actions during branch meetings would have an effect on the eventual outcome, saying the majority of gatherings went down without any incident.

Political analysts have however stated that the ruling party could face stern opposition with both the Democratic Alliance (DA) and Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) vying for control of the Johannesburg, Tshwane and Nelson Mandela Bay Metros.
