ANC launches campaigning ahead of crucial NMB by-election

JUNE 8, 2015

The African National Congress (ANC) has begun campaigning ahead of a crucial by-election in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, which the ANC needs to win to maintain its dominance of the municipality and could bolster its confidence ahead of the 2016 Local Government Elections.

Parties will soon test voter confidence in their manifestos when they meet head-to-head in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality's Veeplaas ward. The ward became vacant after the death of an ANC councillor last month - which has decreased the ANC's majority in the council by one seat.

Losing the seat could be a terrible blow for the party, which has lost around eight wards in the province since the last election.

"The by-election is very important. Remember, ANC actually secured a two-thirds majority in this council - and of course we dropped down and our duty is to retain those wards. Especially the wards we lost by mistakes on our part, we shall have to fight," ANC task team member, Thobile Mhlahlo, told the SABC.
