ANC meets DA in Makana Local Municipality by-election

JULY 17, 2015

The African National Congress (ANC) and the Democratic Alliance (DA) are expected to meet in another dress rehearsal of the 2016 Local Government Elections when they contest in a by-election for the Makana Local Municipality’s Ward 1 on Wednesday next week.

The by-election will be contested by the ANC’s Melikaya Phongolo and the DA’s Carolynn Clark.

According to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), the ward, with 1 625 registered voters, became vacant as a result of the death of an ANC councillor.

While the ANC are hoping to hold onto the ward, the DA are not taking the by-election lightly as well. DA Federal Chairperson and Eastern Cape leader, Athol Trollip, is expected to lead a campaign for votes with MP Nosimo Balindlela in Riebeek East on Sunday.

“This is an opportunity for residents of Riebeek East to show their support for an alternative government that will create and uphold a society based on freedom, fairness and opportunity,” the DA said in a statement.

Special voting at voting stations as well as home visits will take place on Tuesday, July 21 between 08h00 and 17h00.
