“ANC’s failure to deliver NMB houses disgraceful” - Trollip

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Nelson Mandela Bay has accused the African National Congress (ANC) of failing to deliver on its promise of providing houses to poor communities in the Metro.

Speaking in a statement, party Provincial leader, and Nelson Mandela Bay Mayoral candidate Athol Trollip, said a reply to a Parliamentary question revealed that only 440 out of the targeted 2 778 houses were delivered at the end of the current financial year, equating to a delivery rate of 15%.

“Of a backlog of approximately 70 000 units, it is simply disgraceful that the ANC government, both at a local and national level, continues to fail at delivering on never-ending promises of housing in this Metro,” Trollip said.

“The ANC simply does not care enough. We continue to see vain publicity stunts, where one or two houses are delivered by a visiting Minister or by the broken-promises Nelson Mandela Bay administration, but it is clear that once-off events are not delivering anything close to the number of houses desperately needed”.

He also took a swipe at the Metro’s “failure” to address the ongoing problems of sanitation, water loss and gangsterism, saying President Jacob Zuma’s recent comments that the interest of the ANC comes before those of South Africa, are playing out “in Nelson Mandela Bay more than ever before”.

“A dedicated and caring government would set targets, and would meet them. Housing would be properly budgeted and would be meticulously administered - value for money houses would be delivered to all who qualify in a sustained roll-out. That is the change that our people deserve,” he said.
