ANC wins all ward by-elections held in Eastern Cape and Free State

The African National Congress (ANC) has retained the two municipal wards it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections in by-elections that were held on Wednesday in the Eastern Cape and Free State provinces, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has confirmed.

The new councillors for the African National Congress are:

  • Mpumelelo Elias Mapholobain Ward 16in the Mbizana Municipality – EC443.  The seat was retained by the party with 83.84% of the 1 993 votes cast.  Voter turnout was 45.50%.
  • Nozenza Betty Cezula in Ward 39 in the Mangaung Municipality – MAN.  The seat was retained by the party with 45.29% of the 5 379 votes cast. Voter turnout was 51.64%.

The Mbizana Local Municipality ward was contested by Mpumelelo Elias Mapholoba of the ANC; Simon Mfanafuthi Thukwana of the African People’s Convention and Kholisile Stanford Geya of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). 

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 58.56%.

Meanwhile, the Mangaung Municipality – MAN was contested by McDonald Itumeleng Mosala an independent candidate; Nozenza Betty Cezula of the ANC; Tshidisang Simon Tsie of the Azanian Alliance Congress; Abel Tatolo Mphahlele of the Congress of the People; Kabelo Christopher Moreeng of the Democratic Alliance; Tsholohelo Moses Mosemeng of the Economic Freedom Fighters and Chiloane Enock Thole of the Forum 4 Service Delivery. 

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 53.67%.
