Angry taxi drivers block off NMMU Missionvale Campus entrance over shuttle service

Update: Entrance now open. Representatives of the drivers and NMMU management currently engaged in discussions over the taxi operators' grievances.

The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s (NMMU) Missionvale Campus entrance has been blocked by striking taxi drivers. The campus is located along Johnson Road in the Missionvale area and is within reach of townships such as Zwide and New Brighton.

The taxi drivers are reportedly unhappy about the University’s use of Port Elizabeth-based shuttle service company, Blunden Coaches, to ferry students to and from the campus - which falls under their taxi route.

Students have been advised to park their cars outside the Campus, but are still able to enter the building.

The NMMU said that management is currently attending to the situation and that more information will be provided once they get a clear picture of what exactly is happening on the ground.
