A 30-year-old Arcadia man, believed to be a gang member, is now awaiting sentencing after he was found guilty on Wednesday by the Port Elizabeth High Court on charges of murder, illegal possession of a firearm and illegal possession of ammunition.

"On 12 January 2016, the deceased, Christian Edward (27) and friends were sitting in a shack at the side of a house in Gentian Street in Arcadia, Bethelsdorp, when the accused stormed in by kicking open the door," said police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu.

"The accused asked for Edward and fatally shot him three times.

"Calvin Busten 'alias Kalahaan' was arrested by the Provincial Gang Investigation Unit on 2 February 2016 at his house in Jenniker Street, Bethelsdorp."

He remained in custody until the finalisation of the case.

Sentencing will be passed on 12 December 2016.

Busten is believed to be a member of the G-Stars gang, which is an affiliate to the Spotbouer Gang.

This is the fourth case in this month where gang members from Port Elizabeth's Northern Areas have either been sentenced or found guilty on gang related cases.

The Cluster Commander for Mount Road Cluster, Maj Gen Dawie Rabie, has welcomed the guilty verdict and has emphasised that it is through thorough investigation of the cases and the integrated partnership with the prosecuting authority "that we, the SAPS can enhance our strategy of achieving a goal of building a society where law abiding citizens in the Northern areas ARE and FEEL safe".
