A Somali businessman was killed outside his store in NU3 in Mdantsane, East London, while he was rushing to his pregnant wife at Frere Hospital – just a day after another Somali shopkeeper was killed in an robbery in the city’s Kwelera area.

Forty-year-old Adam Addi Wahab had just locked up his shop early on Tuesday evening and sitting in his car about to go and attend to his wife, who was going to labour at the time, when an armed man appeared behind him and opened fire.

“I was about to get into the passenger seat when I heard the shots.

“After shooting my brother, the shooter came to my side and opened two shots towards me but both missed, only making holes on my jacket and trousers,” Abshir Abdullahi, Wahab’s brother told the Daily Dispatch.

Adbullahi said he ran away and community members, who heard the gunshots came to his rescue when they screamed, causing the shooter to flee on foot.

Police spokesman Lieutenant Nkosikho Mzuku said Wahab was pronounced dead on arrival at Cecilia Makiwane Hospital in Mdantsane.

Mzuku said the police searched for the gunman, but could not find him.

Police are now on the lookout for the suspect as well as the five suspects involved in the Kwelera murder.
