Another veld fire reported south of Grahamstown

JUNE 27, 2016

The South African Weather Services' Port Elizabeth office on Monday morning warned that they had picked up another fire south of Grahamstown on their satellite imagery. This is the second one this month, after another fire was observed in the area on the 8th of June.

"There are high FDI (Fire Danger Index) values forecast for the area," said Garth Sampson, the SA Weather Services Client Liaison Officer for the Eastern Cape.

"Unfortunately dry Berg winds will fan the fire this morning, before the South Westerly comes through , further aggravating matters."

Sampson said that by 11 am, winds will be North Westerly 40 gusting 55 km/h and by 2pm, the winds will shift to South Westerly 30 km/h.

"Smoke could hamper driving in the area," he said, adding; "Open fires must be avoided under these conditions."
