August new vehicle sales lowest so far


The National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA) has recorded yet another decline in the sales of new vehicles for August despite the continuing rise in exports.

Aggregate total domestic sales were down 8.2% to 51 055 units from the 55 610 recorded over the same period last year. Individual segments also showed a significant decline with the sales of passenger vehicles falling 7.8% from last year’s 37 843 units to 34 885, while light commercial vehicles posed a similar drop in sales from 14 940 to 13 781.

Further declines were also posted in the market for medium and heavy duty commercial vehicles with the former down 11.6% and the latter 17.9%. Exports continued to post gains with an increase of 12.3% from 24 989  to 28 069 units.
