BE READY: Eskom to shut down generators over long weekend

APRIL 22, 2015

Eskom has warned South Africans to brace themselves this weekend for what it has called a 'long weekend maintenance festival'.

The power utility says a number of generating units will be taken offline while those that have broken down will be repaired.

It says this is to ensure that there is no backlog during winter.

Eskom's spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe believes doing this will put more pressure on the grid over the long weekend, but the likelihood of load shedding will be minimal.

Meanwhile, Eskom has applied to the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) to grant it a further double digit increase.

This comes hot on the heels of a 12.7% increase which came into effect this month.

On Wednesday tweeted that; "load shedding prognosis for today is medium for the morning and very high for the evening dependent on the performance of our power plants."
