Beach-side excellence: Crawfords Beach Lodge is one of the Eastern Cape’s top resorts

BY GRAEME LUND - MAY 18, 2015

Ask a group of friends what they consider to be a perfect holiday environment and you will receive a variety of answers ranging from forest chalet and mountain lodge, to game reserve tented camp. Personally, I like a beach resort best - and one of my favourites in South Africa is Crawfords Beach Lodge, in Cintsa, on the Wild Coast.

Set within the contours of the coastal dunes and lush indigenous forest, Crawfords offers excellent accommodation, fantastic service and one of the best restaurants of any resort I have been to anywhere in the world.

There are 30 luxury suites which consist of double and twin bedrooms, all spacious, en-suite and each with their own private entrances and balconies from where you can witness all the happenings around the lodge or the beach. Most of these suites offer spectacular views of the Indian Ocean which is just a few metres away.

The suites are fully-equipped with king or queen-sized beds to refresh tired travellers, a bar fridge, DSTV, coffee and tea making facilities and either air conditioning or fans. Each luxury suite has an en-suite bathroom and comes with a safe for your valuables.

Like all resorts, Crawfords offers a host of activities to suite the whole family from de-stressing at their spa, Senses; to lawn bowls; tennis; pool; a games room for kids; family beach cricket; as well as others that they can arrange for you including quad-biking; canoeing; rock and deep sea fishing; abseiling; horse riding; surfing; day hiking and safaris at surrounding game reserves.

Despite all this and the beautiful beach, it was the buffet meals that occupied my family’s thoughts most. Be it breakfast, lunch or dinner, the buffet tables absolutely groan under the bowls, platters and carving boards that are heaped with the most delectable food. The tables are set with a full array of cutlery, from soup spoon to desert spoon, to ensure that you take full advantage of each meal.

Sated, you cannot help but have an afternoon nap or a very deep, eight-hour sleep which is made all the more comfortable by the king-size beds with crisp percale linen.
