Bedford protest claims one life

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has opened a murder docket following the death of a 23-year old man in a protest march in Bedford yesterday afternoon.

In a statement, police spokeswoman Brigadier Marinda Mills said that a group of residence blocked entry to municipal office with drums, tree branches, stones and burning rubbish shortly after 13h45. No details as to why the protest took place were released.

Mills stated that the march turned violent after the protestors started hurling rocks and bricks at members of the local and public order police while marching towards New Brighton Township. Shots were fired with the body of the victim found after the crowd has dispersed. His name has not yet been released.

Two suspects were been arrested for public violence, while one officer sustained slight injuries and a police vehicle damaged by the protestors.
