Bethelsdorp hunting for driver after minor dies in hit and run

Update: Port Elizabeth police have announced that a 26 year-old man was arrested on Sunday afternoon, at his house in Windvogel, after an apparent fatal hit and run incident involving a 4 year-old Bethelsdorp boy over the weekend. Read nore.

A 4 year-old Bethelsdorp boy sustained fatal injuries in an apparent hit and run incident on Saturday evening, at the corners of Bergins and Bardiem Street, Bloemendal. According to Bethelsdorp police, the child’s mother was getting into a taxi when a blue jumbo Golf, travelling at high-speed hit the child.

“The child was dragged a few metres before the vehicle sped off without stopping. Orlando Du Plessis died at the scene,” described police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu.

She added that witnesses allege that there were three occupants in the car - two males and a female.

The victim's family had attended a funeral and was on their way home, when tragedy struck.

Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide and have appealed to the public for assistance in tracing the suspect. The public can contact SAPS Bethelsdorp on 041 404 3009.  

In an unrelated incident, elsewhere, Butterworth police are investigating another case of culpable homicide after a 40 year-old Butterworth man was killed by a car at Ndabakazi Village, Butterworth.

According to Butterworth police, the incident took place on Saturday, at about 19:10 along N2 road at Ndabakazi Village, Butterworth.

“The deceased was crossing the road when he was hit by a car and he died instantly at the scene,” described Butterworth police spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha.

The cause of the accident is still being investigated by the Butterworth Police.
