Bethelsdorp man gunned down after visiting mom; illegal firearms found nearby

OCTOBER 31, 2016

Port Elizabeth police over the weekend launched an investigation after a 25-year-old Bethelsdorp man was gunned down after visiting his mother.

"It is alleged that at about 20:35, the man visited his mother, [who was staying] at his sister’s house and left to go home," police described.

"A few minutes later, his mother heard a gunshot outside the house. Her son was found lying at corners of Eucomus and Independence Streets, Ext 36 Bethelsdorp.

"He sustained a gunshot to his head. A case of murder is under investigation."

While police were still on the scene they received information of a firearm kept at a house not far from the crime scene.

"The investigators from the Provincial Gang Investigation Unit immediately followed up on the information and a 30-year old suspect was arrested and detained for illegal possession of a firearm," police said.

"A Rossi.38 revolver with four rounds of ammunition was tossed over a chair. Police also seized a Glock firearm, which was found in the washing machine."

The suspect is expected to appear in court soon.
