Bhisho man gets 23 years imprisonment for killing girlfriend

The Station Commander of Bhisho SAPS, Colonel Nomonde Mene, on Tuesday welcomed the conviction and sentencing of 43 year-old Zulu Sontsi, of Tyutyu Location, in Bhisho, for murdering his girlfriend, Ida Ndzuzo, 47, in May this year.

According to Eastern Cape police, Sontsi had an argument with the victim and shot her several times in their home at Tyutyu Location, Bhisho.

"The victim was taken to hospital and died due to the injuries she sustained.

"Police arrested Zulu Sontsi on 15 May 2015 for murder and he appeared at Zwelitsha Magistrate Court on 18 May. The investigating officer successfully opposed bail and the suspect was remanded in custody."  

The case was transferred to Bhisho High Court on 24 August but the suspect was again remanded in custody to appear on 23 September.

"Following a court order, the investigating officer discovered and linked the suspect to seven other cases of assault strengthening his case during court proceedings."

The trial continued from the 23 to 27 November and the suspect was found guilty for assault and murder.

He was sentenced to twenty three years imprisonment for murder and twenty-one years for assault, the sentences will run concurrently.

The Station Commander of Bhisho SAPS Colonel Nomonde Mene congratulated the Detective Unit members for securing these sentences. She also applauded the investigating officer for his excellent investigation skills that managed to secure a successful conviction.

“The suspect was sentenced within six months and this is a result of a job well done by the investigating officer,” added Colonel Mene.
