Big weekend for DA in the Eastern Cape as it elects Trollip's successor

It's a big weekend for the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Eastern Cape, which kicks off its two-day Provincial Congress on Friday. For the first time in 15 years, a new Eastern Cape Provincial Leader will be elected as Athol Trollip, who has held the post since 2002, steps down.

He is currently the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Executive Mayor.

It is believed current DA Eastern Cape Chairperson, Veliswa Mveya, is to square off with Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality's Human Settlements Portfolio Councillor, Nqaba Bhanga, for the leadership position. 

Trollip's former camapign manager, Andrew Whitfield, is believed to be eying the position of Chairperson while veteran, Bobby Stevenson, has thrown in his hat for the Deputy Leader position.

while the eelction will take place on Friday, the results will only be known on Saturday.

"The Saturday programme will include the keynote speech by DA Federal Leader Mmusi Maimane, and will include voting on motions and resolutions, and the announcement of the newly-elected Provincial Leadership," the party said.
