Blackout at Loftus postpones ABSA Premiership clash between Chippa, Sundowns

The ABSA Premiership clash between Chippa United and Mamelodi Sundowns, had deferred to postponement due to a power failure at Loftus Versveld in the Pretoria suburb of Arcadia on Tuesday night.

The two sides were at a scoreless deadlock when the blackout occurred on the 42nd minute of the game. This was the second time in the month of February that the two sides met, after the first was played on Valentine’s Day (14th February), which saw the match end in a 1-1 draw on a deemed mud-filled surface at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane.

In the match duration at Loftus, the Sundowns were closest to scoring, when on the 17th minute, a header from Hlompho Kekana bottom-ended the cross bar, which allowed Chippa keeper, Daniel Akpeyi, in a second attempt, to gather the ball from crossing the whitewash.

In a chance to now regroup and rejuvenate some sort of headway against the African champions, this especially coming after a 2-2 draw to the Golden Arrows last Friday and a 2-0 loss to the struggling Bloemfontein Celtic the Sunday before, Head Coach Dan Malesela iterated that the players need to hold themselves accountable for their prospects.

"Now it is up to the players to man up. I'm worried most about the character because if you don't have character and you are going to Pretoria and don't have the strength to face Sundowns, then you are going to face problems,” Malesela described to KickOff before the Sundowns clash.

"It's not the end and we have to fix these things. That is why we are here and that is why we are coaches, we've got to fix this,” Malesela added.

The match between the Chilli Boys and Sundowns is set to resume at Loftus Versveld at 10:00 on Wednesday morning.
