Police in Bloemendal, Port Elizabeth, on Monday afternoon arrested a 21-year-old male suspect for possession of illegal firearm and ammunition.

It is alleged that on Monday, at about 15:45, officers from the Visible Gang Intervention Team were patrolling Bloemendal when they received information that their colleagues from SAPS Bethelsdorp were in hot pursuit of armed suspects.

According to police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, one person was spotted running in the bushes in William Slammert Drive, Bloemendal.

“Members pursued after him and a 21 year old male was arrested and found in possession of a 9mm pistol and ammunition,” she said.

She added that the suspect was detained on a charge of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

“This is the fourth firearm with arrests that was confiscated in the Northern Areas in the past three days,” added Colonel Naidu.

SAPS Cluster Commander for Mount Road, Maj Gen Funeka Siganga, commended the members on their speedy reaction to the information received.

“When there is teamwork and collaboration between the different units, only positive results can be achieved,” said Maj Gen Siganga.
