Blood bank critically low due #feesmustfall protests: SANBS Port Elizabeth needs you
Due to national protest action at universities, a number of blood drives had to be cancelled, on very short notice, the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) in Port Elizabeth said on Thursday.
"The units of blood we anticipated to collect at the various universities will now not be able to happen. This will have a negative impact on the blood supply to hospitals and ultimately on patients," said Maryke Harris, at the organisation.
"It is critical for SANBS to collect sufficient safe blood, especially since there are only a 2-day stock of blood nationally instead of the required 5-day stock. Levels are expected to fall even further if the deficit is not addressed as a matter of urgency.
"For this, we need YOUR help, in any way possible. We appeal to you to please support a blood drive today by donating a unit of blood and to encourage family members and friends to join you."
