Boer War memorial vandalised

Police in Burgersdorp have opened a case of malicious damage to property following the defacing of Anglo-Boer War memorial on Tuesday.

The latest incident comes two months after a series of similar attacks were carried out on monuments in Durban, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Pretoria, Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage, with the majority being attributed to the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).

Speaking to News24, Democratic Alliance (DA) Ward Councillor, Marina Van Zyl, said that the defacing of the monument, which was erected in 1908 to remember those who died during the war, could have been the result of political anger as it shows two boers standing next to each other with the names of those who died carved between them.

No one has yet accepted responsibility for dousing the monument with dark green paint.
