Bok trio miss out on Blitzboks Olympic squad selection

Springbok trio, Bryan Habana, Francois Hougaard and Ryan Kankowski have all been overlooked as the Blitzbok squad for the Rio Olympics was announced on Thursday.

Coach Neil Powell announced a squad of 12 players who will be led by captain Kyle Brown, with the aforementioned missing out on selection even after featuring on the Boks Sevens platform this season.

Frans Hougaard, however, will stand in as a travelling substitute, along with Chris Dry. Other regular fifteen-a-side players, Juan de Jongh and Cheslin Kolbe, who both play for the Stormers, irreversibly made the cut.

The Olympic Sevens will run from August 6th-11th and South Africa will contend in Group B against Australia, France and Spain.

This year will mark the first time in 92 years that rugby gets played in the Olympics with the USA currently holding the gold medal title back when it was contested in 1924.

Springbok Sevens Olympic squad:

Cecil Afrika, Tim Agaba, Kyle Brown (captain), Juan de Jongh, Justin Geduld, Werner Kok, Cheslin Kolbe, Dylan Sage, Seabelo Senatla, Kwagga Smith, Philip Snyman, Rosko Specman.
