Boom times for accommodation sector: Tourism Business Council of South Africa

FEBRUARY 2, 2015

The Tourism Business Council of South Africa says the accommodation sector has shown some positive economic growth.

This was after the council released the Tourism Business Index, for the fourth quarter of 2014.

The survey uses the accommodation sector as well as conference sectors, businesses and attractions, foreign exchange and tourism retail businesses, to calculate and monitor the growth or decline in the country's tourism sector.

“We're definitely growing. Two things help us, those of us in the industry will still put it down to a 2010 effect where we really repositioned ourselves globally and we're seen as a top and upcoming destination,” Head of Hospitality and Tourism for Grant Thornton, Gillian Saunders, told the SABC.

“We've won lots of prizes, all of our cities; Durban, Cape Town and Joburg have won prizes. We in a top 50 destinations in the world."
