Booysen Park protesters torch Algoa Bus

SEPTEMBER 14, 2015

Port Elizabeth police were on Monday morning involved in running battles with angry residents from the city's Booysen Park after they embarked on a violent service delivery protest.

After blocking all the roads leading to the suburb with burning tyres and rubble, the residents also torched an Algoa Bus that had arrived in the area to ferry commuters on the first day of the working week.

They also threatened to burned down public property if their demands are not met. Among the residents' grievances is a demand for houses.

Police, who are monitoring the situation, early on used water cannons, teargas and rubber bullets to disperse the protesters, who responded with petrol bombs.

Drivers are advised to seek alternative routes.
