BREAKING WITH CONVENTION: The Boardwalk’s International Convention Centre is a step up for the region
Built as part of a R1 billion investment in The Boardwalk Casino by empowerment group Emfuleni Resorts, the International Convention Centre (ICC) is the most modern in the Eastern Cape.
It ticks all the boxes for event organisers - ten minutes from the airport, a short stroll from the full range of hotels, stunning views of the Indian Ocean, plenty of space for delegates and exhibitors and is managed by a highly experienced and motivated team.
Despite having opened in December 2012, it has already hosted a number of exhibitions and conventions including the launch of the new VW Polo.
The 3 000sqm convention centre can accommodate up to 1 700 delegates seated cinema-style, offers break-away rooms that seat between 34 and 170 comfortably, as well as three boardrooms seating 10 to 14 people. Exhibitions can be staged on the same floor, or in a separate 3 000sqm space that leads directly off The Boardwalk’s retail area.
One of the reasons for Emfuleni Resorts’ investment in the ICC is the ideal geographic position of Port Elizabeth - equidistant from Durban, Gauteng and Cape Town – and making it a strategically natural choice for national and international conventions. Another reason is the wide choice of pre and post-convention activities that can be offered to delegates in order to make the event that much more memorable.
Among the advantages the Boardwalk’s ICC has over other large convention centres in South Africa, is the ease of access that delegates have to many of Port Elizabeth’s top restaurants and hotels – including the prestigious new five-star Boardwalk Hotel and Spa, where all 140 rooms have a view over the Indian Ocean.
This magnificent view, carefully considered and fully-utilised by the architects, is shared by the convention centre, which has giant picture windows overlooking manicured gardens and the ocean in the assembly areas and break-away boardrooms.
Ample budget beds are also available within walking distance along the Port Elizabeth golden mile.
For convenience, the ICC has its own dedicated kitchen headed by a professional chef. Working with organisers, the chef carefully crafts menus to suit the theme and budget of the event.
Approved suppliers of audio-visual equipment, shelf schemes, décor and entertainment are also always on-hand to help make the event extra special. Shuttle services to and from the airport, and between the hotels along the strip, can be arranged with ease.
