Brewing Passion: Bridge Street Brewery, great service, delicious beer!

The Bridge Street Brewery is the culmination of many years of experience for Lex Mitchell – pioneer of micro brewing in Southern Africa.

Having joined Ohlssens Brewery in 1977 and leaving as Amstel master brewer in 1981, Lex really wanted to go at it on his own.

In 1983, Lex started Mitchells Brewery in Knysna, and entered the beer market with Foresters Lager, Bosuns Bitter and Raven Stout, later adding Pippin Cider and 90 Shilling Ale to his brews. Mitchells became legend along the Garden Route.

In 1995, Lex moved his family to Port Elizabeth, sold Mitchells Brewery in 1998, staying involved until 2002. After a much needed break, Lex realised that he could not stay away from his dream and passion any longer. He needed to start something new and his dream had always been to return to the basic brewing principals.

After years of evaluation and discarding of ideas and venues, a new partnership was forged in 2011, with the purpose of establishing a Microbrewery and Restaurant in a previously neglected building steeped in history. Our situation on the bank of the Baakens River and the passion for great beer brewed in the true, traditional artisan fashion makes for an unbeatable combination.

The first brew mashed in on the 1st of January 2012 and the Bridge Street Brewery was born, bringing new life to a neglected area of Port Elizabeth.

The Bridge Street Brewery makes its artisan beers under the banner of the Boar’s Head (the Mitchell Family Crest), and brews three distinct beers and a cider solely for the patrons of this venue. Here you will be able to sample Celtic Cross Pilsner, Boar’s Head Bitter, Black Dragon Stout and Bowman Cider, each with their own unique taste, and each brewed under the watchful eye of Lex Mitchell himself.

All of our beers are unpasteurised and unfiltered, retaining all the natural flavour.

A wonderful addition to Port Elizabeth, my hope is that you will enjoy the uniqueness of each of our beers, savour each one’s individuality and keep coming back for more.

Bridge Street Breweries has also recently launched their function venue which can accommodate for up to 50 guests and can supply a wide variety of platters and snacks.
