Buffalo City Metro deploys more lifeguards to beaches

DECEMBER 29, 2014

The Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality on Sunday announced that it has deployed nearly 50 trained lifeguards to safeguard beaches within the metro. The guards will be working throughout the day until eight in the evening.

Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality Spokesperson, Keith Ngesi, has urged beach goers to look after their children and swim in the designated areas.

“We are also pleading with people not to swim in areas where there are no flags, they should swim between the flags where there are life guards deployed. If you are swimming in the non-swimming areas then you are not protected.”

Eastern beach in East London is one of the most popular spots during the festive season. People come from all over to swim or just relax at the coast.

Some first time visitors are having a good time, especially now that the weather is pleasant again.

“It’s very scary because the water pulls you into the sea like it’s going to drown you or something, but the weather here is beautiful," says a family who travelled from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth.

Daniel Nqoniso is a budding entrepreneur, capturing the fun times for families on film and he says business is good.

“The good people of East London are kind so it’s going quite well, business at large is going good too.”

Beach goers have been urged to stay away from the beach and out of the water while under influence of alcohol.
