Butterworth man killed over tobacco 'roll-up'

OCTOBER 26, 2015

A Butterworth man was stabbed to death on Saturday when he was confronted by a group of men demanding that he gives them his rolled-up tobacco joint he was smoking, Eastern Cape police said.

The 25-year-old man was killed on Saturday around 02:15 after leaving a tavern at Langeni location in Mqambeli Village in Butterworth, Captain Jackson Manatha said.

The man was approached by a group of about five men along the way who demanded that he give them the roll-up. "The deceased is alleged to have refused to give the 22 year old man his zoll. It was at that stage the 22-year-old suspect drew his knife and fatally stabbed the deceased on his upper body," Manatha said.

The suspect allegedly fled the scene but was later traced and arrested on Saturday afternoon.

He is expected to appear in the Butterworth Magistrate Court on Monday on a murder charge.
