Butterworth man slapped with 18-year jail sentence for rape and housbreaking

The Butterworth Regional Magistrate's Court on Friday convicted and sentenced 23-year-old Vuyisile Nqumshe to 18 years behind bars for the 2013 rape of a 26-year-old woman. The accused was also sentenced to four years imprisonment for housebreaking. Both sentences to run concurrently.

"It is alleged that the victim visited her boyfriend on 21 July 2013 at Maduna Location, Hange Village, Ngqamakhwe," said police spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha.

"The victim and her boyfriend had a misunderstanding that resulted to the victim leaving her boyfriend.

"She requested a place to sleep over from a nearby homestead.

"On the same night, at about 21:00, while she was sleeping in her room alone, the accused kicked the door open  and raped her."

Captain Manatha said that he was identified by the victim, who later reported the case at Ngqamakhwe Police Station.

"The Butterworth Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) traced and arrested the accused," he said.
